Gondek Announces Plan to Strengthen Transit Safety and Reliability

October 7, 2025

Calgarians rely on transit every single day. To get to work, to school, to care for their families, to move across our growing city, and ultimately to stimulate our economy. They deserve a system that is reliable and affordable. One that earns their trust, and makes them feel safe, every time they step on board.

Right now, too many riders, too many operators, are feeling unsafe. They’re facing unpredictable service, inconsistent schedules, and in some cases, unacceptable behaviour and conditions. We can do better. We must do better.

That’s why today, I’m announcing a comprehensive plan to strengthen safety and reliability across Calgary Transit in my next term.

First, safety. Every Calgarian, whether they’re behind the wheel or on the bus or train, deserves to feel safe. I will work to develop a Transit Safety Strategy that aligns with national best practices and addresses staffing, infrastructure, and mental-health response. Next, I will champion a Transit Safety Oversight Committee bringing together Calgary Transit, Police, Bylaw Services, and social agencies. Because safety isn’t about enforcement alone, it’s about addressing the root causes of disorder like addiction, homelessness, and mental health challenges.

Under my leadership, we will also expedite the installation of operator safety barriers on every bus, following through on the urgent Council direction that’s long overdue. And, I will continue warming-centre and off-hours shuttle programs, so transit doesn’t become a substitute shelter for vulnerable Calgarians during extreme weather.

Second, reliability. Safety and reliability go hand in hand. Calgarians deserve buses that arrive on time and trains they can count on. We’ll direct the City to use data to identify where frequency must increase, and we’ll publish a real-time reliability dashboard so riders know exactly what to expect. At the same time, we’ll expand transit-on-demand options in areas where shift workers and late-night employees need better access.

And finally, affordability. We’ll explore free zones, free days, and equity passes, building on partnerships and sponsorships to make transit more accessible for everyone. Because when we invest in a transit system that’s safe, reliable, and fair, we’re investing in a Calgary that works for everyone. This is what it means to protect what matters. And a Calgary that works for everyone? That’s how we continue building what’s possible.

My transit plan is about respect – respect for riders, respect for operators, and respect for every Calgarian as we build our city’s future, together, on purpose.
